P7 release their butterflies

7th Jun 2019

Over the past 6 weeks the P7 pupils have really enjoyed raising butterflies in their classroom.

Conor from Ms Quigley's class wrote a piece for our website:

'Over the past 6 weeks we have been raising butterflies. 5 butterfly larvae came in a little cup with all the food they needed to survive.  In the first week all they did was eat, then all five shed their first exoskeleton and almost doubled in size.  In the next week they shed their exoskeletons another 3 times, they also spun webs to protect themselves from predators.  They started to climb the sides of the cup.  In the 4th week they pupated into chrysalides.  We carefully moved them into the butterfly habitat.  Three had dies so we removed them.  In the 5th week they hatched expelling a red meconium, a waste product which they did not need.  We released the adult butterflies at the end of the 6th week.  It was a great experience.'
